Hesperia Madrid *****
Madrid, Spain
The nation's capital harbors many luxury hostelries of impeccably high standards. No surprise there. What does merit attention is that this newcomer was an instant occupant of the highest rung of the ladder.
Everything is in order at the Hesperia Madrid, from the cheerful greeting at the door to the glow of marble and brass in the spacious lobby, from the anticipatory service to bedrooms so draped and cushioned in rich fabrics you'll be reluctant to leave. But do step out on the grand Paseo de Castellana, the broad, tree-lined boulevard that connects this northerly, modern district of the city with the center, where the major museums and sightseeing destinations reside. There's a metro station at the corner, so you can be at the glorious Prado in minutes.

In surrounding blocks are many of Madrid's most celebrated restaurants, but it isn't necessary to leave the Hesperia for a memorable gastronomic experience. On premises is Santceloni, which was awarded a Michelin star within months of opening. It's hugely popular with cosmopolitan Madrileņos, so it's a good idea to make dinner reservations when booking a room. All meals are offered in La Manzana, the proficient but more affordable main dining room. And tucked into a corner is the Scotch Bar, with bottles of champagne cooling in a large ice bucket. Bubbly for breakfast, perhaps?
