Palacio Marqués de la Gomera ****
Osuna, Spain
Here is a Spain less seen. Often listed among the 10 most beautiful towns in Spain, Osuna is in the heart of Andalucía, just off the highway connecting Seville and Granada. Malaga and the Costa del Sol are less than 70 miles to the south. Osuna has an majestic monumental center that survives nearly intact from the time it was the seat of one of Spain's most prominent dukedoms. Remains of a Roman amphitheater are seen and the residences of noble families are much in evidence along its handsome streets and plazas.
Facing lovely San Pedro Street is the gloriously Baroque facade of the 18th Century mansion that has been transformed into the Hotel Palacio Marqués de la Gomera. The central court is enclosed by two floors of arched loggias and is the setting of La Casa del Marqués, one of the hotel's two restaurants. The more casual Asador de Osuna utilizes a woodburning oven to produce the roasts and grills for which Old Castile is known.
An air of intimacy is enhanced by the limited number of bedrooms -- only 20 -- with no two alike but uniformly luxurious in both spaciousness and appointments. Satellite TVs, air conditioning, room safes and Internet connections are standard. Babysitting is available, and the hotel can arrange car rental and guided tours.
